Germantown Friends School’s campus integrates historic and contemporary architecture across several urban blocks. The school engaged DIGSAU and Leslie Gill Architect to develop a comprehensive campus master plan that shapes future growth around four core principles: honoring history, strengthening connections within and beyond the campus, enhancing the student experience, and promoting environmental responsibility. The first project to be implemented in this master plan is the All-School Commons, a transformation of the existing Smith Gym and Loeb Performing Arts Center into a vibrant hub for learning and community engagement. The building includes flexible, light-filled art classrooms and maker spaces, a new courtyard, and a central dining room that serves the entire K-12 campus.
Section through the classroom addition and renovated Smith Gym
The All-School Commons piloted the school’s campus sustainability framework, enabling the team to define, implement, and assess its goals in practice and establish a model for future campus development that aligns with its values and vision.
