Basecamp Delta is the first of six sub-camps at the Summit Bechtel National Scout Reserve in West Virginia. The property was once the site of extensive coal mining that was subsequently remediated to create wide flat areas that tier the terrain into a series of “benches” that establish the sites for the six sub-camps. The vibrant color of each basecamp is fundamental to the wayfinding strategy for the 14,000 acre site which accommodates 50,000 campers at full capacity.

Basecamp Delta, which consists of a ceremonial Flag Plaza, a utilitarian Headquarters Building, and a sculptural Pavilion establishes the tectonic vernacular for the remaining basecamps through the use of simple forms, natural materials, and color.

The Headquarters structure utilizes economical production framing techniques to create a layered and day lit structure with raw plywood interior and exposed conduit. The flat roof of the Pavilion contrasts with the undulating ceiling which mirrors the surrounding mountain topography. The column grid establishes the East-West direction whereas the ceiling orients towards due north.
